Lima’s Visual Arts Network Brings Together Artists of All Disciplines

Ruth Ann Sturgill has been a member of various art groups around the region for years, most of them focusing on one medium or type of art.  After visiting art groups in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia that were multi-media, she was so motivated and impressed that she knew that was what our area was missing.

Sturgill worked for months to compile a list of artists in the area and a place to hold meetings. Finally, the Visual Arts Network (VAN) was formed on March 31, 2003 in Lima, Ohio.

The Visual Arts Network has a mission..."to promote and elevate the visual arts in our community through fellowship, education, and sharing."

VAN meets the last Monday of every month.  Its members come from all over the area...Delphos, Van Wert, Celina, and Wapakoneta, Ohio; and Decatur, Indiana; as well as Lima.  Currently they are meeting at Ruth Ann Sturgill’s studio in her home.

The artists work in oils, watercolor, photography, mixed media, clay, and carpet sculpture.  They bring new creations to the meetings to share with the group and tell how they approached it.  The members also network about classes and competitions they feel might fit for certain members of the group, answer questions from members about techniques and materials, and provide encouragement for each other.

The Visual Arts Network been asked to do back to back shows at the Diane Kidd Gallery at Tiffin University, in Tiffin, Ohio.  The first show, "Passages", will open January 25 and run through March 3, 2007.  An opening reception with the artists will take place on Thursday, January 25, from 7-9pm.  The second show, "Flora & Fauna", will take place from March 8 through April 14.

The group has also been invited to participate in "Art in the Gardens" in the Botanical Gardens in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, on Saturday, March 24.  Many of their artists will be demonstrating and exhibiting their works for sale. VAN member Anna Fisher will be teaching a free workshop for kids, creating garden bugs and creatures out of clay.

The Visual Arts Network is open to anyone interested in the arts. Dues are $20.00 per year.  For more information, contact Ruth Ann Sturgill at 419-331-4999 or email studioartist@woh.rr.com
