Private lessons for students and adults are available at the Portland facility during the school year for the following instruments: trumpet, French horn, guitar, percussion, harp, piano, voice, flute, clarinet, saxophone, recorder, violin, viola, and cello. Instruction for a limited number of instruments is available for a six-week period during the summer. At this time, only piano instruction is offered at the Collective Center.

Group Instruction & Ensembles

Optional group instruction is available for students and adults in addition to their individual lesson or on its own. Students may choose from Stateline Singers, Music Explorers, Brassissimo!, Brown Paper Sax Saxophone Ensemble, Eastern Breeze Flute Ensemble, Distant Thunder Percussion Ensemble, and Music Major Boot Camp. Music da Capo is offered for infants and toddlers.

Stateline Singers

This ensemble provides students in upper elementary through high school an opportunity to learn sight singing, singing in parts, music theory, and music history as a part of the choral experience. The choir meets once a week for at least 32 weeks of the school year. The Stateline Singers present several concerts during the season.

Music Explorers

This class provides group activities designed for students in grades 1-6 or beginning students interested in learning the fundamentals of music. Students explore the basics of music reading and understanding using a variety of hands-on activities.

Brassissimo!

New in 2007, Brassissimo! is open to all experience brass players regardless of age. Although primarily a performance group, Brassissimo! will allow students to improve and sharpen skills while adding to their general musical knowledge and enjoyment in an ensemble setting.

Eastern Breeze Flute Ensemble

The Eastern Breeze Flute Ensemble is open to all experienced flute players regardless of age. Although primarily a performance group, the flute choir will allow students to improve and sharpen flute skills while adding to their general musical knowledge and enjoyment in an ensemble setting. Eastern Breeze Flute Ensemble is sponsored by Delta Theta Tau, Xi Chapter.

Distant Thunder Percussion Ensemble

The Distant Thunder Percussion Ensemble is open to all experienced percussionists regardless of age. Distant Thunder is also primarily a performance group, allowing students to sharpen and improve percussion skills in an ensemble setting. Distant Thunder Percussion Ensemble is sponsored by Kenji and Masue Funada in memory of Kinya Funada. Marimba on loan from Joyce Beck.

Music Major Boot Camp

Music Major Boot Camp is a class for those high school students considering a music major in college. This course will primarily involve a study of music history, but will also include sight-singing and ear-training exercises and advice on preparing for music major applications and auditions.

Music da Capo

Literally translated as “music from the beginning”, Music da Capo provides an early introduction to the elements of music, structured for infants to toddlers and their caregivers. Each session is designed to introduce children to joyful music and movement in a creative environment that will make parent and child feel at ease. Music da Capo is sponsored by Pizza Hut.

Musical Petting Zoo

These week-long workshops are designed for children and teens to try new instruments or musical experiences. Petting Zoos are offered in guitar, voice, strings, and band instruments. The Musical Petting Zoo is sponsored by The Star Press Children’s Charities, Inc.

Fees

Participating in the MusicWorks program requires both commitments of time and money. Becoming proficient in music requires effort over an extended period of time. For this reason, fees are based on the school year or the length of the class offering. Significant sponsorship support has traditionally played an important role in maintaining reasonable fees for participation. A limited number of scholarships are available based upon need and student commitment.
