Arts Place is organizing a
Cultural Districts Conference in light
of the recent passage of legislation authorizing
the Indiana Arts Commission to establish a
cultural districts program. Our goal is to
educate arts providers and community leaders in
our region about the new legislation and
facilitate a discussion about the opportunities
and challenges in creating a cultural district.

During these
sessions we will demonstrate the
uniqueness of existing cultural districts in
order to encourage communities to consider their
own specific cultural, social, and economic
needs. Challenges of creating a
district will
be addressed, particularly securing funding,
managing stakeholder interests and attracting
talented people to the district. Strategies
for
promoting the arts in local communities will
also be discussed, as this is the building block
of a successful district. Arts providers,
government officials and community leaders will
all be engaged in the conversation as partnerships between these groups is fundamental
in the success of a district. Most importantly,
we hope to create enthusiasm and generate ideas
for this exciting new program!
