Session Description:  Representative Eric Koch will explain Indiana’s Cultural District Legislation and opportunities this creates for communities in our state.


 

Development of Indiana’s Cultural District Program

Lewis Ricci - Executive Director, Indiana Arts Commission

 

Session Description:  Lewis Ricci will give an update on the state of Indiana’s cultural district program and explain the long-term vision for the program.


 

CVB Partnerships in Arts Development 

Brenda Myers - Executive Director, Hamilton County CVB

David Attaway - Executive Director, Switzerland County Tourism

Karen Niverson - Executive Director, Marion/Grant County CVB

 

Session Description:  These panelists represent communities that are actively promoting the arts to increase tourism.   This panel will discuss how convention and visitors bureaus should be engaged in developing the arts as well as strategies to encourage cultural tourism.


 

Developing Artist Communities in Rural Areas 

Sherry Timms – Director, Ohio County CVB

 

Session Description:  This session will focus on Rising Sun’s Arts as Economics program.  Sherry Timms will discuss challenges in building artist communities in rural areas, as well as the benefits of bringing artists to a small town.

                                                                                                                                                           


Walk on the Creative Side—How Three Unique Cities Built Successful Cultural Districts

Miah Michaelsen - Asst. Economic Development Director for the Arts, City of Bloomington

Kristen Wicker - Oregon Arts District Coordinator, Downtown Dayton Partnership

Mary Lyons – Covington Arts District Manager, City of Covington

 

Session Description:  These panelists represent cultural districts in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky.  The districts are at different levels of development and in cities of various sizes.  The three speakers will present strategies for successful cultural district development that are sure to speak to communities of all sizes!

 


What are Cultural Districts For?

Dr. Michael Rushton – Director, Arts Administration Program, Indiana University

 

Session Description:  Dr. Rushton will discuss cultural, social, and economic issues that communities must address when planning for a cultural district.  He will stress the importance of developing a cultural district that fits into a community’s long term vision for its future.

 


The Necessity of the Arts in an Economic Development Vision

Ron Carter – President, Carmel Redevelopment Commission

 

Session Description:  Ron Carter will discuss how a community must develop a clear vision for its future—and how the arts must have a role in that future!
